How studying in Germany works

Bachelor's programs at private universities usually take three years, and master's programs one year. Many private universities have intakes in autumn and in spring.

Entry requirements

For a bachelor's degree you need your secondary school diploma and transcripts. Depending on your country, you may first need a foundation year. For a master's, you need a bachelor's degree. Universities also ask for proof of English (for example IELTS or TOEFL), a CV and a motivation letter, and some hold an interview.

Student visa

Students from outside the EU apply for a national study visa at the German embassy or consulate. You need your admission letter, health insurance and proof of funds, usually through a blocked account. The required amount is set by the German government each year, and we tell you the current figure. After arriving, you register your address and apply for your residence permit.

Costs

Tuition at private universities depends on the university and the program. Living costs depend on the city, and we give you a clear estimate for every option on your shortlist.

Working while you study

International students can work up to 140 full days or 280 half days a year during their studies.
